Kefalonia for Families
Holidays in Kefalonia are perfect for the entire family; the island saw a spike in tourism after the movie ìCaptain Corelliís Mandolinî became a worldwide success. This Greek Island is one of the larger islands with rocky, pebbled beaches along the north and white sand beaches along the south, where tourism is more prominent.
The best time to visit Kefalonia is during the summer months when the weather is hot and more enjoyable for outdoor activities. However, the months of April, May and September are warm enough during the day to make for an enjoyable Kefalonia family holiday.
Holidays in Kefalonia provide endless entertainment for the children; the history along the island is insurmountable, which means the kids will enjoy an educational holiday. St. Georgeís Castle is a must do when in Kefalonia. The kids will enjoy wandering through the castle up close and personal, seeing what architecture from the 13th century looks like and learning about the Byzantines and the Roman Empire. Because the castle sits high on the island, the view down at the island at sunset is breathtaking.
One of the great things about visiting Kefalonia is that you’re not limited when it comes to choosing accommodation. There are a number of hotels on the island, but a great alternative is hiring your own villa. This way, there’s the option of your own private pool, a whole apartment to enjoy and some villas even include a main and chef service! If you think that a villa in Kefalonia would suit you and your family, Sunset House can sleep up to 6 people, or Villa Nichola sleeps up to 8 and is an elegant choice with graet views.
From your villa, take the kids down to any of the beaches on the western and southern ends of Kefalonia to watch the loggerhead turtles hatch, climb their way out of the sand and make their way into the ocean. The entire family will enjoy keeping quiet and watching the hundreds of tiny turtles as they begin their lives.
A Kefalonia family holiday is not complete without time spent on the beach. For children, the best beach on the island is Poros Beach, which is quiet, tranquil and has shallow, calm waters where the kids can swim without the worry of deep water or strong currents. The water here is perfect to take the kids snorkeling where they can see the colorful fish in their natural habitat.
One of the most popular family activities in Kefalonia is the nighttime stroll, which is called the volta. Families head to the capital city of Argostoli to take a walk along the courtyard while the sun is setting. Hundreds of families bring their children out for a volta, where the kids run freely around the square playing and making new friends while their parents enjoy the view from the setting sun, along with al fresco seating at a number of small restaurants and cafes. The square is visible from every table, which means you can let your kids play with the other kids in the square while enjoying your drinks or dinner without letting them out of your sight.
After a long day of visiting beaches, seeing the local history and playing with others in the courtyards, it won’t be unusual to find the kids exhausted. Take them back to your villa where they can sleep in the bedroom whilst the adults enjoy a glass of wine on the patio – bliss!
